Au-delà de cette anecdote bien réelle, "Nchalla" peut revêtir deux significations. Les deux sont d'origine culturelle :
- au moyen-orient, pour ne pas vexer quelqu'un en lui disant "Non !", on va préférer la notion de NPS = "Non Presque Sûrement" = Nchallah, autrement dit : "si ça revenait à moi, je te dirais "non" mais Dieu peut en décider autrement". Ca lui laisse un espoir, l'espoir d'un miracle, et l'espoir fait vivre...
- certaines personnes très pieuses rajoutent "nchalla" à la fin de chaque affirmation comme si elles craignaient d'offenser "le créateur". Une caricature bien répandue de ce comportement raconte qu'un prof de math enseignait la géométrie de la manière suivante : "Deux droites parallèles ne se rencontrent pas... sauf si Dieu l'autorise (êlla bi izhni 'llah). Et si jamais elles se rencontraient, alors : il n'y a de puissance que par Dieu" (la 7awla wa la quouwwa êlla bêllah)
Pour rester dans le verbe vouloir, un petit rappel :
